The Dwight Brown Insurance Agency was started by Dwight Brown Sr. in 1941; the agency was first located on Main Street in Ellsworth, Maine. In 1966, the agency purchased the O.W. Tapley Agency expanding the customer base in the greater Hancock County area. Dwight Brown Jr. joined the agency in 1972, where he worked along with his father until his retirement in 1980; Dwight Jr. purchased the agency at this time and continued providing general insurance services to the people of Down East Maine.

Dwight Brown Jr. sold the agency to Union River Insurance, Inc. in 2005 and continued to work until his retirement in 2008. The agency continued to operate under the Dwight Brown Insurance name with Patrick Maguire, Paul Tracy and Blaine Holmes providing the management and ownership responsibilities. The agency’s association to the Grindstone Financial Group, LLC strengthened its position in the insurance industry allowing the agency to continue to provide the highest level of customer service and insurance products.

The J.C. Milliken Agency was started in Cherryfield, Maine by James Milliken in 1864. Hollis C. Fickett hired on with J. C. Milliken Agency in 1952, helped add real estate to the business in 1955. Richard Fickett, Hollis’ son, succeeded his father as president of the agency in 1975 and by 1979, had opened branch offices in Ellsworth, Machias, and Prospect Harbor. An Eastport branch was added in 1984 when the agency purchased the Richardson Agency.

In 1983, Hollis L. Fickett, grandson of Hollis C. and son of Richard joined the agency as the head of insurance sales in the Cherryfield office. Hollis L. took over as president of the agency while Richard continued in real estate. During this 30 year tenure Hollis L. Fickett expanded the agency to additional Down East locations including Bucksport and Calais. In 2013, the traditionally family run agency has merged with the Dwight Brown Agency to form the Brown and Milliken Agency.
